Neutral tones had a major moment at last night’s Academy Awards with Cate Blanchett, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Julie Delpy, Portia de Rossi, Sally Hawkins, and Sarah Paulson all sporting various shades of creamy beige on the red carpet. Simple jewels filled in the details for the standout gowns of the evening’s best looks.
Women weren’t the only ones establishing the evening’s trends, however. The men of the Oscars were also spotted making a number of style statements by opting for alternative color palettes to that of the traditional black. Dallas Buyers’ Club stars Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey, and eTalk host Ryan Seacrest all selected white jackets while Kevin Spacey and Leonardo DiCaprio chose crisp, classic navy.
The Oscars for the Best Dressed go to…
Five – Lupita Nyong’o in Prada
Best Supporting Actress winner Lupita Nyong’o lived a fairytale night from start to finish. The new style icon arrived on the red carpet in a pleated ice blue gown with a plunging neckline. Working closely with her stylist and the people at Prada, she selected the color for her princess gown as a reflection of her hometown, Nairobi. Paired with Fred Leighton jewelry and accessory of the night – the headband – Nyong’o’s Oscar-winning look was the perfect vision of confidence and poise to accompany her beautiful acceptance speech.
Four – Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Reem Acra
One year after her very pregnant walk on the 2013 Academy Awards red carpet, Mrs. Channing Tatum showed off her slim figure in an elegant Reem Acra gown, boasting an embellished bodice and ruffled skirt. Simple hair and jewelry made the perfect pairing for the stunning nude-toned center-piece.
Three – Kerry Washington in Jason Wu
Best-dressed-list-fixture Kerry Washington now has best baby bump style to add to her list of perfect red carpet appearances. The mother-to-be opted for a beautiful loose-fitting strapless gown by Jason Wu. Washington rounded out the look with a winning combination of simple yet elegant Jennifer Meyer jewelry, loose waves, and perfectly matched nail and lip colors.
Two – Kate Hudson in Versace
Wavy, side-swept tresses and simple accessories formed the details of red-carpet-favorite Kate’s sizzling bombshell style. Oozing sex appeal, the actress turned heads in a stunning cream-colored Versace gown boasting a plunging neckline and cape-like open back, her svelte figure and small chest perfectly fit for this uniquely cut piece.
One – Cate Blanchett in Armani
With a simple yet elegant classic Hollywood wave in her blonde locks, Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett also takes the title of Best Dressed in a perfect nude Armani gown featuring sheer cap sleeves and embellishments. To complete her look, Cate opted for a beautiful pair of opal, diamond, and white gold earrings from Chopard.
At this year’s Oscars, red carpet couples were of equal stature to single stars. When it came to the best looks of the night, a flawless significant other made the perfect accessory. Power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were a vision – him in Tom Ford, her in Elie Saab – while Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves wore a Dolce&Gabbana suit and Gabriela Cadena gown paired with soft and beautiful hair and makeup.
Discordantly, nonconformist Pharrell Williams ditched his famed Arby’s-style hat (at least until he was on stage and dancing with front row nominees Lupita and Meryl) and opted for a different head-turning selection – a lack of pants… Or as the Lanvin tux/shorts combo has been dubbed: the shortxedo. Wife Helen Lasichanh balanced out the duo in a monochrome ensemble consisting of a white blazer and skinny black trousers.
Finally, Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres offered red carpet style competition to both the men and women of the night by working multiple Saint Laurent tuxedos throughout the evening and doing so swimmingly (Finding Nemo pun intended). In addition to showing us she can ‘break’ Twitter, order pizza to the biggest awards event of the year, and score Lupita’s Clarins lip balm, Ellen also demonstrated her ability to maintain style icon status. Wife Portia stunned in Naeem Khan, offering yet another example of perfect Oscars arm candy.
