Give Yourself the Perfect Summer Manicure at Home
If you’re simply too busy to make an appointment at the salon, or you need to cut back on spending, it’s quite okay to do your own manicure at home. Follow these 10 easy steps to get your at-home manicure just right. No one will notice the difference.
Ten Steps for the Perfect Summer Manicure at Home:
-
- Remove old nail polish – Use your favorite polish remover to remove old polish. Remember, if you are wearing red or a dark color, don’t smear polish all over your fingertip and cuticle. Start at the cuticle and gently wipe polish away with upward strokes toward the nail tip. Getting red polish in the cuticle causes for a bigger mess to remove. Wash hands afterward.
- Trim, file and buff your nails – Trim nails with clippers first, then file rough edges to smooth and shape. Then, gently buff nails to smooth ridges on the surface.
- Gently push back cuticles – Soften cuticles by soaking fingers in warm soapy water for 5 minutes each and then push back gently with a cuticle stick. Try to avoid cutting them if the cuticles aren’t too long. If you do cut them, cut as minimal as possible and be careful.
- Exfoliate and wash your hands – Exfoliate hands and wrists with a gentle scrub (sugar and warm water works fine) t0 eliminate dead skin cells.
- Moisturize your hands – Now add moisturizer to hydrate skin. Be sure to remove moisturizer from nail with rubbing alcohol to prepare nails to paint.
- Apply a base coat – Apply base coat to protect nails and prevent chipping. A base coat sets the surface to ensure your color goes on smooth and perfect.
- Apply the first coat of nail polish – Apply a coat of your favorite Summer hue. Let dry for a minute.
- Apply second coat of nail polish – Gently apply the second coat of nail polish. If your color is on the sheer side, feel free to add a third coat if needed.
- Apply top coat – The topcoat protects your manicure from chipping and adds extra shine to nails. Use a “quick dry” topcoat for fast drying.
- Let dry – Clean up any mistakes with polish remover and a cotton swab. Give yourself a good 7-10 minutes of drying time to ensure polish is dry before using your hands. Use a fan or nail dryer for fast results.
