Closet Filled with Clothes? Here Are a Few Tips for Getting Rid of Clothes You Don’t Wear
There are many reasons why you may want to get rid of clothing. Perhaps you’re interested in taking the first step towards starting a capsule wardrobe, or you simply don’t have any more room in your overflowing closet. Whatever the reason, getting rid of clothing can be a great way to simplify your wardrobe and clear out the clutter. Unfortunately, parting with clothing is often harder than we think. Whether it’s sentimental value or guilt associated with giving away a piece you spent money on but barely wore, saying goodbye to clothing—even if you haven’t worn it in months—can be challenging. If you have trouble parting with clothing pieces, check out these tips for getting rid of clothes you don’t wear.
Start With the Obvious
Starting by getting rid of any unwearable items is a great way to ease yourself into making the more difficult clothing decisions. By unwearable, we mean any items that have stains, tears, rips, are too big or small, or are otherwise unfit for regular wear. After all, you’re probably not going to wear something with a large stain across the front, and if it hasn’t come out now, odds are it never will. Getting rid of these items is a no-brainer.
Lay It All Out
Another tip for getting rid of clothing you don’t wear is to lay everything in your closet out across the floor. While this may make a bit of a mess, it can help you get a good look at everything in your wardrobe. Once you’ve laid everything out, start adding the items that you regularly wear and love back into your closet. Doing so will allow you to take a close look at each item in your closet and determine if it’s worth keeping.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
If you’re not fully ready to part with an item but know that it doesn’t really have a place in your wardrobe, consider putting it in storage for a while. Putting an item in storage is a lot less committal than selling or donating it. As such, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of downsizing your closet without necessarily having to make that hard decision.
In a few months, take the item out of storage and decide if you want to keep it or let it go. If you haven’t given the item a second thought in several months, you’ll probably have an easier time saying goodbye.
