Who’s Wearing What in Metro Detroit?
It’s true no one can compare to the legendary Photographer Bill Cunningham and his infamous Street Style column for the New York Times. The way he captured images on the street made you dream of getting caught in your favorite pair of shoes, treasured jewelry, newest trend, or that special piece of attire that you saved up to purchase.
In the Metro Detroit area there is so much style, so many unique shopping locations, and such diversity of cultures that Detroit Fashion News (DFN) can’t help ourselves but to share what we see with our readers and followers. We hope you enjoy Street Style in the D.
It is that time of the year in Michigan where we are all running out the door in excitement to enjoy our few months of summertime weather. Whether we are going to a summer street festival, outdoor wedding, grad party, a parade or a car cruise, DFN wants to help you with ideas to pull together stylish looks for all of the special events on your calendar. We will guide you to find the perfect thing to wear for whatever is on your schedule.
When you’re out shopping, look for these summer runway trends: Black and white racings checks, camo-prints (yes they are back on the shelves and hangers), and of course platform shoes are a must. Add to that, some feminine favorites as well: baby-doll dresses, lots of sheers and ruffles, embellishments, appliques, and floral prints are a go-go!
For a little extra fun add a little cherry, pineapple, or fun fruit print. Most important! Do NOT escape the season without the embellishment and accessory of the season – Tassels! They will dance with you whether you’re in the mood for jazz, classic, your favorite hometown bands, or rock n’ roll. You will find them in almost every store as earrings or embellishments on fashions and accessories.
Now, on to who’s wearing what! Emmy Andrews, from Newport, wears this adorable look featuring a fruit print short jumper. Emmy pulled the various items together from her closet that were purchased from some of her favorite stores including Forever 21.
Emmy added a pop of red with a pair of rhinestone-embellished sandals. Large silver hoop earrings finished the look with a gold name necklace that’s very “in” this season. Looks fab!
Floral prints are popping up all over the summer fashions styles like this rayon cotton split style dress/jumper worn by Southgate resident and recent grad Jawea Deboard.
Jawea looked gorgeous for all the grad parties she attended. She kept her accessories simple with a major statement piece, a Michael Kors Watch. Her black lace up shoes are from Kohl’s.
Residing in Detroit and working at the Hair Lounge in Wyandotte, hair stylist Julie Perez is enjoying the summer with a great look that takes her right from work to play. We found her basic black off the shoulder top for $26 – sizes x-small to large at www.lulus.com. You might even want to get the other colors; nude, rusty rose and light brown, to add to your wardrobe at that price.
She purchased her cotton print shorts at Kohl’s. The extra feminine detail of the black lace trim on the hem makes these shorts perfect for the season. Shoes were purchased at Macy’s. Similar pair at www.macys.com Ivanka Trump Daylana Espadrille Wedge Sandals retail at $125.00.
To complete the look, add your favorite dangle earrings and of course visit your salon for a great style!
The best way to add a little personality to your look is through the accessories. Here are two ladies that make and sell their items at festivals and artisan shows and both are rocking the hottest item of the season: Distressed Jeans.
Ellayne Astrein of Farmington Hills of Hattitudes hand embellishes each hat to be unique in style. Ellayne stays comfortable and stylish with an ivory pair of quilted slide on shoes. They are the perfect way to stay stylish and for a long day walking around and being on your feet. Similar item can be found in a variety of colors: Steve Madden Zaander Slip-On Sneaker retail for $59.95 at www.nordstromrack.com.
Lastly, Amy Coffee – Coffee Upcycle, from Riverview creates One-of-a-kind recycled items like burlap totes and bags. We found her rocking of few of her bags, and loved the lace vintage tank with her denim. For similar lace tanks:
