Fall 2020 Trend Alert: How To Wear Shearling Four Ways

Shearling never goes out of style, but for fall 2020, designers have made it a must-wear trend. Shearling was all over the runways in every imaginable form. Hermès shearling was oversized; Celine decorated it with sequins. If you’re wondering how to wear shearling with your wardrobe, the answer is easy: any which way you can.

As a Collar

The leather-and-shearling bomber jacket has been iconic since World War II, and it’s expected to costar again in next year’s Top Gun sequel. Women’s shearling collars have more of a shaggy ’70s vibe, like Penny Lane’s signature coat in Almost Famous. You’ll find it this fall in pieces as diverse as macho aviator jackets and bohemian chic overcoats and every shearling style in between. Pro tip: The more swagger you have, the bigger your collar should be.

As an Accessory

If you love the look but want to wear it without overheating, shearling works as a textural detail with any accessory. As Ugg has taught us, shearling should line at least one pair of your go-to boots. Women can have fun with smaller shearling purses, like a fringed clutch, or with leather and fur in Fendi’s baguette. Men can incorporate some fuzzy flair into their shoes, slippers, hats, and gloves.

All Over

Teddy coats have been on the rise for a while, and now full shearling coats are interchangeable with fur coats as luxe toppers. Louis Vuitton is showing an all-black, bathrobe-styled version with laser-cut logos. Women can also wear the “walking hug” look dressed up or over leggings and hoodies. The cozy caramel color has given way to darker neutrals and more streamlined pastel outerwear.

As Sherpa

If shearling is too close to fur for your comfort, consider a Stella McCartney piece. The designer insists on working only with responsibly sourced and cruelty-free wool. Another alternative is sherpa, often called “faux shearling,” which is made of polyester fleece, acrylic, or cotton. It has the same indulgent texture and warmth of shearling but isn’t nearly as expensive.

A shearling jacket is a wise investment piece because it’s a foundation piece that adapts to different styles. If you don’t remember how to wear shearling once the cooler weather hits, don’t panic. There’s no wrong way!
