On the runway, at networking events and at local charity gatherings, Rosemarie Lewis is inspiring people left and right and she isn’t about to slow down. This local mom knows who she is, knows what she’s good at and brings her A game every time.

From Miami to Detroit, RoseMarie is making a name for herself with her crochet collections. I had the opportunity to interview her and am excited to share her story with you.

DFN: Please tell us about Yubehandmade and how your passion for crochet fashion came about.

Lewis: Yubehandmade is a unique fashion brand dedicated to creating stylish and high quality crochet items. My brand is particularly known for its Resort wear and stylish crochet clothing. The yarn collection features a wide array of yarn, each chosen for their texture, color, and durability to ensure that every piece is both beautiful and long lasting.

The passion for crochet fashion began as a personal hobby, a way to unwind and express creativity through intricate and colorful designs. Over time, this hobby evolved into a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in crochet and its potential to create fashionable items. Recognizing a gap in the market for high quality, handmade crochet fashion, the decision was made to turn this passion into a business, aiming to bring unique, handcrafted pieces to a wider audience.

DFN: When did you realize you wanted to be a designer? Did you have other aspirations when growing up?

Lewis: Growing up, I loved fashion and always knew I wanted to be in the industry, though I didn’t initially anticipate being on the design side of it. I realized I was a designer when I finished my first order. The feeling was incredibly satisfying. I love everything about designing and being creative.

DFN: What inspires you to crochet and design?

Lewis: I find inspiration in everything. I’m inspired by vibrant colors and textures of high quality yarns, and I enjoy creating items that are unique. The ability to transform simple materials into intricate and beautiful designs motivates me to keep crocheting. And, it’s so RELAXING! Additionally, seeing my customers appreciate and enjoy my creations fuels my passion and creativity.

DFN: What is your favorite design that you’ve created and why?

Lewis: One of my favorite designs is one of my most recent pieces, which I call ‘The Party Dress.’ It stands out to me because of the reaction it received. When the model put it on, she said it made her feel sexy—something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Her response was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed why I love designing and creating unique pieces that make people feel confident and beautiful.

DFN: Who do you design for? Meaning, who is the perfect Yubehandmade client?

Lewis: I design for individuals who appreciate handmade craftsmanship, unique designs, and quality materials. The perfect Yubehandmade client values fashion that is both stylish and sustainable. Someone who appreciates the artistry and effort that goes into each piece. A person who seeks pieces that make them feel confident, whether it’s a flattering bikini or an elegant crochet dress, knowing that each item is crafted with care and attention to detail.

DFN: Recently you participated in Miami Swim Week. What was that like? Are there any other cities you would like to expand to?

Lewis: Miami Swim Week was amazing, I’ve done shows in Los Angeles but I would love to go back.  I would love New York and even international fashion Hubs like Paris and Milan to reach a broader audience. Each city has its own unique fashion scene.

DFN: What local collaborations have you enjoyed most? Why?

Lewis: My favorite collaboration would be with Hot Commodity Eyewear. They have something for everyone! I have so many other great collaborations but it’s just so many! I make sure I tag everyone when I post because I appreciate everyone I work with. Sometimes I can’t believe I get to work with all this great talent.

DFN: Where can our readers purchase your designs?

Lewis: My designs can be purchased at www.yubehandmade.com

DFN: Not only are you a wife, a designer, and a businesswoman, but you’re also a mom. How do you juggle it all?

Lewis: Yes! Wife and mom of SIX. I take my yarn and needles with me everywhere I go. lol. You’ll find me crochet at football games and in the car when I need to finish something. My husband and kids understand and they support me. My husband has helped with a few of my designs and my kids will tell me if something doesn’t look nice.

DFN: Do you have any advice for a young designer just starting out? In your professional opinion, what do they need to become successful?

Lewis: My advice for a young designer just starting out is to believe wholeheartedly in what they’re doing. Be original. Don’t feel pressured to follow every trend. Stay creative and consistently practice your craft. It’s okay to say no to opportunities that don’t align with your vision or goals, such as fashion shows. Always believe in your work and know your worth it’s crucial for building confidence and success in the fashion industry.

DFN: Great advice. Thank you, RoseMarie. It was a pleasure speaking with you!

Lewis: Thank you so much to Detroit Fashion News for taking the time to feature me in an article. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to share my journey and passion for crochet fashion with your readers. It means a lot to be recognized by such a respected publication.
